Concealing medicine in patients' food. The practice of administering medication within the food or drink of patients has rarely been described. However a recent study showed that the practice is widespread, occurring in 79% of a sample of longstay care settings of the elderly. Concern was expressed about the lack of openness and poor recording that surrounds the issue. This article cites various cases that have been caught in the limelight and discusses the ethical and legal issues and flunarizine.

Accepted medical practice dictates that the dose of any opioid analgesic be appropriate to the degree of pain to be relieved, the clinical setting, the physical condition of the patient, and the kind and dose of concurrent medication. Provision of much information obtainable only in intragratable drug data files. For example, a pharmacist filling a prescription can more quickly and reliably check for harmful drug interactions through an instant, automatic check of a drug data file when he or she enters the prescription into the pharmacy's computer system, than through consulting a separate, unintegrated, and less up-to-date information source such as a book or data on a compact disk. Relying on such a separate reference would be more time-consuming, and would increase the and folic. Just days into 2007 we already have one of the most significant health care stories of free medicine foundation helps patients taking costly cholesterol, for instance, oxybutynin.

Acupuncture and pain Dr J Spiller, Consultant in Palliative Medicine, St. John's Hospital, Livingston and Marie Curie Hospice, Edinburgh, Scotland Email juliet.spiller mariecurie Abstract Background Pain is common in the elderly and is associated with functional limitations, fatigue, sleeping problems, depression and reduced quality of life. Conventional analgesics are often poorly tolerated in this age group and may cause life-threatening interactions and side-effects. Patients are often keen to explore non-drug measures such as acupuncture. Methods Human and animal studies indicate that acupuncture afferent pathways engage the descending inhibitory system. Release of various neurochemicals including endogenous opioids may also contribute to its analgesic effect. Only two studies have specifically looked at acupuncture use in the older population and both examined its use in chronic back pain. Results In 2003, Meng et al. showed significant reductions in disability score, analgesic use and drug side-effects which were sustained for four weeks beyond the fiveweek treatment period.1 In 1999, Grant et al. showed significant reductions in pain scores and analgesic use for both acupuncture and Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation with a slight further improvement for acupuncture at four weeks' follow-up.2 Conclusions Acupuncture can be a useful adjuvant analgesic in the elderly and can help to minimise drug use and side-effects. Data were rarely used for decision making. Health Center and dispensary management committees These committees consist of 9 members 3 from faith based organizations, 2 women, 1 man, 1 youth, and the in-charge of health facility ; . They stated their functions to include planning, budgeting, resource mobilization, linking facilities to communities, approval of facility improvement plans and employment of casual workers. According to the respondents, the health center and dispensary committees had significantly contributed to improvement of physical structures through resource mobilization for physical structure improvement. Many of them were reported to have mobilized resources and constructed laboratories, maternity wings, toilets and water tanks. 2.3.2 Management structures, planning and information system.

Diagnosis is difficult because of the broad spectrum of clinical manifestations. Acute form Common form: gradual onset over one to 2 weeks: undulant fever up to 39-40C ; lasting 10 to 15 days, night sweats, chills, asthenia, joint and muscle pain. Possible sacroileitis, arthritis knee ; and orchitis. In regions where malaria is endemic, the possibility of acute brucellosis should be considered when a high fever persists despite correct anti-malarial treatment. Other clinical forms: Typhoid-like form: sudden onset with signs of septicaemia; high fever, typhoid state, delirium, abdominal signs. Subacute form: mild, non-specific clinical signs that do not lead the patient to seek medical attention. Serum test positive. Secondary brucellosis Prolonged asthenia, focal signs: Bone and joint involvement: arthritis of the hip, sacroileitis, spondylitis with sciatalgia pseudo-Pott's disease ; . Neurobrucellosis: pseudo-tuberculosis meningitis, meningoencephalitis; a complication at vertebral site involving peripheral nerves may cause motor and or sensory disorders. Chronic brucellosis General signs; physical and mental asthenia, sweating and polyalgia. Focal signs: slow developing bone, neuromeningeal or visceral foci and flunarizine. RESULTS OF OPERATIONS Year ended December 31, 2004 compared to year ended December 31, 2003 Revenues Revenues increased $4, 158 or 17% to $28, 017 for the year ended December 31, 2004 from $23, 859 for the year ended December 31, 2003. This increase was due to strong market performance from the Company's key promoted products, including Dostinex , Estring , Oxytrol and Plan B , which increased by 36% compared to the year ended December 31, 2003. The increase in revenues was partially offset by decline in sales of Urisoas , as a result of generic competition, and, a decline in sales of Oesclim , due to the recent medical concerns relating to female hormone replacement therapies. Gross Profit Total gross profit increased $2, 748 or 16% to $20, 443 for the year ended December 31, 2004 from $17, 695 for the year ended December 31, 2003. Gross profit, as a percentage of revenues, declined to 73% for the year ended December 31, 2004 from 74% for the year ended December 31, 2003. This decrease in gross profit, as a percentage of sales, resulted primarily from a change in proportion of products sold for which the Company earns a distribution fee and consequently does not incur costs of sales related to these products. Selling and Marketing Expense Selling and marketing expense decreased $3, 602 or 32% to $7, 540 for the year ended December 31, 2004 from $11, 142 for the year ended December 31, 2003. Selling and marketing expense, as percentage of revenues, decreased to 27% for the year ended December 31, 2004 from 47% for the year ended December 31, 2003. This decrease was primarily attributed to decreased selling and marketing activities on Androderm . It is expected that selling and marketing expense, as a percentage of revenues, will be between 35% and 40% for the year ended December 31, 2005. General and Administrative Expense General and administrative expense increased $157 or 6% to $2, 784 for the year ended December 31, 2004 from $2, 627 for the year ended December 31, 2003. General and administrative expense, as a percentage of revenues, decreased to 10% for the year ended December 31, 2004 from 11% for the year ended December 31, 2003. It is expected that selling and marketing expense, as a percentage of revenues, will be between 10% and 12% for the year ended December 31, 2005. Research and Development Expense Research and development expense increased $2, 379 or 183% to $3, 681 for the year ended December 31, 2004 from $1, 302 for the year ended December 31, 2003. This increase in research and development expense related to the New Drug Submissions for Vantas Histrelin Hydrogel Implant ; and GlucaGen ; an increased number of research and development projects in fiscal 2004; a provision related to prior year investment tax credits of $557; and $396 related to certain license payments for unapproved products. To determine what goes wrong with type checking and ultimately, why ; , we have to go beyond the quantitative analysis of the results presented in the previous section in Table 7. In addition to those quantitative measures, we have to look at specific examples to see why correctly typed answers are rejected, and why we accept incorrectly typed answers. For this analysis, we looked at the results of the two methods IG and STO, as they involve two very different scoring mechanisms, and as they had the widest range between accepted incorrect answers and accepted correct answers.
Trabecular meshwork and Schlemm's canal, as noted earlier, accounting for perhaps 80% of normal outflow, Shields explains. There is a second route, called uveoscleral outflow, where the fluid is absorbed by uveal tissues the iris and the ciliary body in the angle of the eye ; , and from there it goes into the suprachoroidal space, where it is absorbed by blood vessels. tk The new technologies, according to Shields, are trying tk to enhance physiologic outflow tk by either directing fluid into tk Schlemm's canal or into the suprachoroidal space. Shields tkT has some experience with the tk. Eyepass Glaucoma Implant, which was developed by Mary Lynch, MD, and Reay Brown, MD, a husband and wife team of ophthalmologists in Atlanta, and which is licensed to GMP Companies. Eyepass is a tiny Y-shaped silicone tube. One end is inserted into the front portion of the eye behind the trabecular meshwork blockage and the other two ends are threaded into opposite sides of Schlemm's canal. The device is currently in clinical trials. The concept is similar to that of Glaukos, which is in pivotal trials with a different kind of device, the iStent Trabecular Bypass MicroStent. Olav Bergheim, who helped found Glaukos with the help of surgeon Richard Hill of the University of California, Irvine, says that he believes the company's device will be able to lower intraocular pressure much more dramatically and reliably than drugs, and he's even hoping one day that such a device will replace drugs for glaucoma. Bergheim credits German surgeon Detlev Spiegel for the concept behind the Glaukos device; Spiegel first described such a bypass procedure in a textbook chapter on glaucoma surgery in the early 1990s. But it was only through the nanotechnology expertise of Morteza Mory ; Gharib, a professor the California Institute of Technology that the device could finally be manufactured, Bergheim believes. The iStent is a tiny snorkel-like stent--a hollow tube made of titanium and coated with heparin--that is no thicker than a human hair. One end of the device is inserted into the anterior chamber. It passes through the trabecular meshwork, essentially bypassing it, and the other end drains into Schlemm's canal. The stent is preloaded onto a single-use Glaukos inserter. The Glaukos bypass stent is now in clinical trials at 13 centers, with 125 patients in each study arm. The company is conducting trials in glaucoma patients concurrently undergoing cataract surgery. A separate incision thus is not required, so future glaucoma surgery options are preserved. Although the company isn't speaking to the public, in a published protocol of its clinical research study in the US.
